IMF paper analyses ‘prolonged decline’ in Asian investment
Asia's pre-crisis robust growth may mask a "languishing" domestic sector that could have significant implications for Asia's long-term economic performance, according to a working paper published by the IMF on January 14.
The author, Yong Sarah Zhou, uses data from the macro and firm level in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to investigate why – when economic growth has swiftly recovered – investment is in a "prolonged decline".
The paper finds investment has suffered most in the non-tradable
