Pan Gongsheng in line to be next PBoC governor

Analysts believe Pan’s appointment as party secretary positions him as the next PBoC governor

The People’s Bank of China announced the appointment of its deputy governor Pan Gongsheng as party secretary on July 1, a move that analysts believe would pave the way for the veteran banker to become the central bank’s governor.

Pan, 59, has been a deputy governor at the PBoC since 2012. He was appointed the head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, China’s foreign exchange regulator in 2016, a role in which he is still serving.

Pan replaces 66-year-old Guo Shuqing as the PBoC’s
