EU: Óscar Arce will become the new director-general economics at the European Central Bank from the first quarter of next year, the ECB announced December 7. He succeeds Frank Smets, who has held the post since February 2017.
Smets, a Belgian national, is taking a year of unpaid leave and will return in 2023 in a “principal adviser” role.
Arce comes to the ECB from the Bank of Spain, where he has served as director of economics, statistics and research since 2018. The holder of PhDs in
