Counterfeit banknotes up in Eurosystem
Central banks in the Eurosystem seized 317,000 counterfeit banknotes in the first six months of 2013, an increase of 13.2% on the second half of 2012.
The European Central Bank (ECB) played down the increase, and said that – as a proportion of the genuine banknotes in circulation – the number of counterfeits "remains very low".
In total 531,000 counterfeit notes were discovered in 2012. The ECB, in a statement released today, said this was "particularly low" and suggested the subsequent increase
