Crypto assets not fit for reserve purposes – World Bank study

Economists say central banks are unlikely to move into non-CBDC digital currencies “any time soon”

Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ethereum will not be suitable for central banks to use as foreign exchange reserves for the foreseeable future, a study by World Bank economists has concluded.

The report by Erik Feyen, Daniela Klingebiel and Marco Ruiz is titled Can crypto assets play a role in foreign reserve portfolios? The authors provide their answer in the report’s sub-title: “Not today, and likely not in the near future”.
