Dutch study uses neuroscience to dissect consumers’ payment choices

Consumers' choice between whether to use cash or a debit card when paying at a point of sale is "often an unconscious decision", according to a research bulletin published yesterday by the Netherlands Bank.

While the use of card payments is on the rise in the Netherlands – accounting for 39% of all purchases in 2012 – the shift away from cash is "not as fast as people might think", as many consumers continue to use banknotes and coins "out of habit".
