Oil price forecast errors make a "significant contribution" to wider inflation forecast errors, according to a working paper published by Banque de France this week.

In How do oil price forecast errors impact inflation forecast errors?, Frédérique Bec and Annabelle De Gaye analyse recent forecasts of inflation in the US and France, concluding that oil price forecast errors impact the wider figures "whatever the country or the period considered".

The economists also found the pass-through of oil
