Bank of Uganda says it was target of $15 million fraud

Central bank says $8.2 million now recovered, but denies staff were involved or that its IT systems were hacked

The Bank of Uganda said it had been the target of a $15 million fraud, but denied that its staff were involved or that its IT systems had been hacked.

Its deputy governor, Michael Atingi-Ego, said during a press conference on December 5 that two payments from the central bank had been diverted in September.

The first, on September 12, for $6.1 million was supposed to be paid to the World Bank. Instead, the payment was made through MUFG Bank of Japan to an entity called Roadway Co Ltd.
