Brief History

After Angola gained independence in 1975, the banking sector was nationalised and the two major Angolan banks, Banco de Angola and Banco Comercial de Angola, changed their names to Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA) and Banco Popular de Angola (BPA), respectively. The BNA, which was established on 5 November 1976 in accordance with the Organic Law 69/76, took over the activities of Banco de Angola and inherited the responsibilities of a central bank, bank of issue and commercial bank
