Private sector banker appointed Bank of Namibia chief
President acknowledges long-standing deputy might have felt “passed over” for role
The president of Namibia has appointed Johannes !Gawaxab as the new governor of the nation’s central bank.
In a statement delivered to camera from the nation’s State House, president Hage Geingob announced !Gawaxab would replace Ipumbu Shiimi on June 1.
Shiimi was appointed Namibia’s finance minister in March. !Gawaxab has been appointed for an initial period of 18 months, the length of the former governor’s unexpired term. After this period, he will be eligible for re-appointment.
