German high court asks European Court of Justice to rule on legal tender definition

Germany’s highest court has asked the European Court of Justice to review the Bundesbank Act to decide whether official institutions can refuse to accept cash as means of payment.

On March 28, the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig – Bundesverwaltungsgericht – referred Norbert Häring’s case to the ECJ, after he was unable to pay the country’s broadcasting fee in cash.

At the moment, the fee can only be paid by direct debit, individual transfer or permanent transfer.
