Most central banks forecast cash demand over one to three years

Median central bank expects 5% increase in cash in circulation in 2024

Most central banks forecast cash demand over a horizon of one to three years, though a sizeable minority forecast over longer horizons, the Currency Benchmarks 2024 show.

Three in five central banks (59.5%) say they forecast over a horizon of 1–3 years. A further 35.1% forecast at a horizon of 3–5 years. One central bank (2.7% of the sample) conducts longer-term forecasts of 5–10 years. No central bank forecasts further than a decade ahead.
