Bank of Russia gains power to demand electoral candidates’ financial information

Candidates’ spouses and underage children are also subject to scrutiny

Russia's central bank can now compel financial institutions to submit "all available data" on "accounts, deposits and securities" held by candidates for electoral office, it has announced.

Financial institutions must submit the same data on candidates' spouses and "underage children", the central bank says. The regulation will apply to "deputy candidates or nominees for other elective posts", it adds.

Deputy is the Russian term for a member of the national parliament. The reference to "other
