Obstfeld will succeed Blanchard at IMF

Lagarde praises the ‘outstanding academic credentials’ of Obstfeld

Maurice Obstfeld will succeed Olivier Blanchard as the International Monetary Fund's chief economist, managing director Christine Lagarde announced today (July 20).

Obstfeld is currently a member of US President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers, on leave from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was first named a professor of economics in July 1989. He will join the IMF on September 8.
