Union activity linked to swings in output
Countries with high union density experience larger fluctuations in output, posits a new paper from the European Central Bank.
The research analyses 20 OECD countries and shows that high unionisation rates translate into stronger bargaining power resulting in resistance to wage moderation during economic downturns and output reduction. The research also finds that employment protection legislation does not affect output volatility greatly.
