Australia also wants wider net for Fund leader

Peter Costello, the Australian federal treasurer, has joined the international chorus urging a departure from tradition in the selection of the next head of the International Monetary Fund.

Costello, together with South African finance minister Trevor Manuel and the Brazilian finance minister Guido Mantega have all called for nationality restrictions to be abolished. Their comments follow similar calls by the new British chancellor of the exchequer, Alistair Darling, and the governor of the Bank
