Central banks should examine demographics – Finnish governor
Rehn says sharp decrease in hours worked and increased immigration may not continue
Demographic trends should receive more attention from central banks, the Bank of Finland’s governor has said.
In a keynote speech today (September 13) at a conference held by the Bank of Finland and the Centre for Economic Policy Research, Olli Rehn said people had worked fewer hours during the pandemic while immigration had increased. This had increased the labour supply and constrained wage pressures.
“We need to ask ourselves whether these trends are likely to continue,” Rehn said.
