Disability poses hidden costs in US – Fed research
Authors also explore how gender gap and living alone affect financial wellbeing
When a person has a disability, it poses hidden costs for their household that are difficult to calculate, according to research from the US Federal Reserve Board.
The study, published on January 10, uses data from the Fed’s Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking from 2019–2023.
Its authors – Zofsha Merchant, Erin Troland and Douglas Webber – cite previous studies, which showed that a household’s earnings potential can be reduced by 15–70% if one or more of its members has a disability.
