RBA’s Lowe discusses potential electronic Aussie dollar
Financial stability risk and reforms in the payment sphere holding back digital currency at present
The governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia has said there would be “little additional benefit” from issuing electronic banknotes at present, as plans to reform the payment system come to fruition.
Speaking at the Australian Payment Summit, Philip Lowe summarised the benefits of issuing a digital Australian dollar, before asking whether there was a public policy case for moving in such a direction.
