Stronger dollar will pose challenges for South African economy, says Mminele

The South African economy will face "new challenges" should a strong dollar persist and a tightening of monetary policy in the US materialise while growth in the euro area remains weak, argues the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb) deputy governor, Daniel Mminele.

"Rising interest rates in the US would have an adverse impact on borrowing costs, while a weaker euro would limit external demand for South African exports, [with] Europe being a major trading partner for the country," he told a JP
