Swiss govt must defend free trade – SNB’s Roth

The Swiss government must take a strong stand on behalf of free trade, said Jean-Pierre Roth, then chairman of the Swiss National Bank's governing board, in a speech in December.

Roth added that Switzerland was well equipped to meet post-financial crisis challenges. He said, however, that it's only major drawback was the fact that it was a geopolitical lightweight. This made it almost impossible for Switzerland to defend itself against protectionist tendencies and discriminatory measures taken
