Sri Lankan governor on poverty and inequality

Aijith Nivard Cabraal, the governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, said that poverty and equality "are often the root causes of political, economic and social upheaval, tension and revolution."

Speaking at the annual sessions of the Sri Lanka Economic Association on 10 August, the governor stressed that the two phenomena were closely linked. He defined inequality as "the lack of or fair treatment in the sharing of wealth or opportunities between different groups in society" and poverty as
