Wholesale and retail trade affiliates owned by manufacturing multinationals account for a considerable fraction of overall affiliate trade, new research from the Bundesbank reveals.

The analysis shows that this type of foreign direct investment, where export-supporting distribution and service activities take place in the foreign market while production remains in the home country, is a quantitatively important strategy of German multinationals in the manufacturing sector.
