Aging, demand and the structure of wages

Substantial shifts in the age distribution of the working population are being brought about by demographic change.

The traditional profile of a high ratio of younger workers compared with older ones is being skewed by the ageing of the so-called "baby boomers" and a new pattern is emerging where there are roughly equal numbers of workers of all ages. This might be expected to have the effect of lowering the wages paid to older, more experienced workers, as they become relatively more plentiful
