Comment: Left out in the cold

While Slovenia celebrates its imminent entry to the eurozone, the Baltic aspirants can feel more than a little peeved by Brussels' handling of their efforts to join the club.

During panel discussion at the Royal Institute for International Affairs on 11 July, participants were in agreement that the Maastricht criteria needed to be either amended or applied in "spirit" rather than "to the letter of the law". Most infuriated should be Lithuania, which narrowly missed out
