Ethiopia is slowly working its way out of being one of the most under-banked countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the National Bank of Ethiopia's Quarterly Bulletin showed.

While the total number of banks remained the same in the second quarter of 2008/9, the report found that banks have continued to scale up resource mobilisation and disbursement activities, with deposit stock increasing by 23.2%, loan collection jumping 40.3% and new loans gaining 10.1% on an annualised basis.
