ECB Monthly Bulletin, April 2006

The European Central Bank published its April 2006 Monthly Bulletin on Wednesday 12 April . In the report the ECB said euro zone countries with excessive fiscal deficits - such as Germany, France and Italy - need to cut public spending.

Such a move would boost economic growth and help keep inflation under control, it said.

While some eurozone members have succeeded in cutting spending in recent years, the five countries that have posted excessive deficits have made little progress in this
