Lord George, former Bank governor, dies

Eddie George, governor of the Bank of England from 1993 to 2003, died of cancer Saturday, aged 70.

One of the most highly regarded governors of his day, Lord George's tenure will mainly be remembered as the era when the "Old Lady of Threadneedle Street" won its independence, almost midway though his two terms, in 1997.
