BoE's Barker sees improved consumer spending

Consumer spending should improve by the middle of 2006, Bank of England policymaker Kate Barker said on Tuesday 22 November.

Asked about those gripes by the Lancashire Evening Post, Barker said: "I can understand retailers thinking that, but I am not sure a 0.25 percent cut in interest rates is going to be enough to encourage people to go on a wild spending spree."

"It is not surprising, with rising petrol prices and energy bills, that people have decided to spend their disposable income elsewhere
