Price surges hitting Africa hard: IMF

Several African countries are set to suffer a large blow as a result of soaring food and energy prices, the International Monetary Fund has said.

Research by the Fund's African Department identified eighteen countries in the sub-Saharan region that it believes will be especially hard hit by the surge in food and energy costs.

The countries mentioned are those for which the trade-balance impact of the 2008 food and fuel price increases exceed either 50% of initial international reserves or 2.5%
