Germany's Steinbrueck defends ECB independence

Germany said Thursday 11 January it would not put up with any change in the independence of the European Central Bank.

"The ECB is independent, and nothing is going to change that," German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck said.

He said it was "the overwhelming opinion" of the governments of the 13 nations that use the euro as a common currency that nothing should tamper with the ECB as a politically independent organ.
