Average volume of defective banknotes remains above 100m units

Central banks retrieved over $1 billion of mutilated banknotes on average

The volume of damaged banknotes central banks removed from circulation in the past year averages over 100 million units, the Currency Benchmarks 2024 find.

Central banks from 32 countries withdrew an average of more than 137.9 million units of defective banknotes. The figure is somewhat lower than the 160.5 million units reported in the 2023 benchmark.

Across 31 jurisdictions, the value of damaged notes withdrawn averages $1.25 billion. The value was higher in 2023, averaging $2.3 billion.
