Brief History

First established as a bank under private charter in 1656, Sveriges Riksbank was the first note issuing bank in Europe. Reorganised under direct ownership of the state in 1668, it was owned by and responsible to Swedish parliament. In 1904 it acquired the sole right of note issue (after an earlier brief period in this capacity). Currently it operates under Sveriges Riksbank Act, 1 January 1989. It is the banker’s bank, lender of last resort and regulates supply of money and level of
