Brief History

Established in July 1960 as Banco Nazionale Somala to take over the activities of Cassa per la Circulazione Monetaria della Somalia and of the branch of Banca d’Italia in the Somali Republic. In December 1968 it absorbed Credito Somalo. On 1 January 1971 it became the central bank, and its branches were taken over by the newly formed Somali Savings and Credit Bank. On 8 February 1975 its name changed to the above.
