Moldova to switch reference currency to euro
Change reflects “economic realities” as country moves closer to EU
The Moldovan leu’s reference currency will be the euro rather than the dollar from January 2, 2025.
The country’s central bank said it was making the change to “align with economic realities”, as the EU was Moldova’s most important trading partner. The National Bank of Moldova said 60% of trade transactions and 70% of remittances were denominated in euros.
