Middle income central banks see largest volume of counterfeit notes

Foil remains least used security feature for banknote production

Central banks from middle income nations cleared out the largest volume of counterfeit banknotes from circulation over the past 12 months, the Currency Benchmarks 2024 find.

The volume of counterfeit banknotes removed averages 16,785 across 33 jurisdictions. The figure is higher in the upper-middle income group of respondents, averaging 51,432. Counterfeit banknotes average 20,464 in the lower-middle income countries. Respondents from high income institutions account for the lowest average
