Retail CBDC work more common than wholesale

Most jurisdictions still lack a legal mandate to issue a CBDC

Around three-quarters of respondents to the Fintech Benchmarks 2023 are involved in retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) work, compared with around half engaged in wholesale. Still, few jurisdictions have a legal mandate to issue a CBDC.

The responses showed 27 (73%) of 37 institutions are engaging in retail CBDC projects.

Around three-fifths (59%) of 27 respondents are still at the research phase of their retail CBDC work. One quarter (26%) of respondents already have proof of concept
