Falling fuel prices drive down index for sixth straight month

Consumer price index (CPI) inflation in the US fell to 6.5% year on year in December, down from its November reading of 7.1%.

This is the sixth consecutive decline in the CPI reading since its June 2022 peak of 9.1%.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that core inflation fell to 5.7%, down from 6% in November. Month on month, headline inflation fell but core inflation increased, mainly due to rising housing-related costs.
