Peru’s likely president-elect will reappoint Velarde
As opponent disputes his narrow win, Castillo affirms role of long-serving governor
The leftist candidate currently leading Peru’s hotly contested presidential election said on June 26 he would reappoint Julio Velarde as governor of the central bank.
In an address in Lima, Pedro Castillo said, “we respect governability. In that context, I ask Dr Julio Velarde that his work be permanent [and] consistent at the head of the BCRP [Central Reserve Bank of Peru]”.
