Newest Fed board member stresses central bank autonomy in first public address

Christopher Waller said “deficit financing and debt servicing issues play no role in our policy decisions and never will”, in his first public comments as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Speaking to the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Waller stressed the importance of central bank independence as a bulwark against inflation.

The new board member countered claims that the Fed would keep interest rates low to ease financing pressures on the federal government
