Costa Rica to issue first polymer banknotes
Central bank will retain size and colour of existing notes to smooth transition to new substrate
The Central Bank of Costa Rica will issue new polymer banknotes later this year, three years after a decision was made to switch banknote substrates.
“The polymer substrate gives the banknotes greater durability, makes them more secure, and allows adequate recycling of waste once it fulfils its useful life,” the central bank says.
Four new banknotes will be printed on CCL Secure’s Guardian polymer substrate. The first three (2,000, 5,000, and 20,000 colons) will enter circulation together
