The scale of the macroeconomic impact of pandemic-related containment measures is starting to show clearly in US statistics.

It has now been 111 days since the US recorded its first case of the coronavirus, on January 22. The virus began to really take hold in the country in mid-March and has now caused more than 80,000 deaths, making the US the worst affected country.

US president Donald Trump declared a national emergency on March 13 and since then many states have imposed strict lockdown
