Central banks shift focus to retail CBDCs

Central Banking survey reveals shift away from wholesale experimentation

Central banks are more likely to launch a retail central bank digital currency than a wholesale variant, according to the results of Central Banking’s latest survey.

While 30% of respondents to Central Banking’s inaugural Central Bank Digital Currency Survey said they were exploring a wholesale model, the majority are focused on research into a retail model.

The figures highlight a shift in central bank thinking; a large proportion of early research into CBDCs concerned wholesale variants
