Global reach has complex effect on banks’ risk profiles, authors find

A bank’s “geographic complexity” has an important bearing on the firm’s riskiness, but there are several effects working in different directions, research published by the Bank for International Settlements finds.

In the working paper, Iñaki Aldasoro, Bryan Hardy and Maximilian Jager study complexity defined as the “organisational and geographic structure” of a bank. They examine how this form of complexity affects risk at 96 global bank holding companies.
