De Guindos stresses uncertainty from coronavirus outbreak

Powell and Carney said Fed and BoE are closely monitoring the virus’s impact on the economy

The vice-president of the European Central Bank, Luis de Guindos, has joined other central bankers in flagging the effects the coronavirus outbreak may have on the economy.

In an event in Athens today (February 3), de Guindos said “there are a lot of uncertainties” related to the disease, which was first identified in China last month. The virus’s rapid spread led Chinese authorities to impose strict travel restrictions and extend the New Year’s holidays last week.
