Global cross-border lending growth at highest rate since 2008

Bank claims continued to grow “rapidly” in Q3 2019, latest BIS figures show

Global growth in cross-border bank lending accelerated to 9% year on year in the third quarter of 2019, the latest figures from the Bank for International Settlements show.

The figures, published today (January 22), show the global growth rate is at its highest level since the first quarter of 2008, albeit well below the levels that preceded the crash. Lending growth peaked at nearly 22% in late 2007. Growth in lending to emerging markets was close to 40% at the time.
