Marvin Goodfriend, a leading conservative economist and central banker, died of cancer on December 5. He was 69.

Goodfriend was director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond from 1993 to 2005, and was later nominated to a position on the Federal Open Market Committee, though his candidacy never made it through the Senate.

On leaving the Richmond Fed, he took up a role at Carnegie Mellon University, later becoming the Friends of Allan Meltzer professor.
