Cambodia extends blockchain payment system pilot

Central bank lengthens trial to end-2019 and explores including cross-border transactions

Cambodia’s central bank is extending the three-month pilot run of its blockchain-powered payment system as it reviews the initial results and studies the impact further.

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) is prolonging the test period of the Bakong Payment System to the end of this year, a spokesperson tells Central Banking. It is also working on expanding the peer-to-peer payment system to include cross-border transactions.

The NBC is one of the first central banks to develop a blockchain
