People: Lagarde and Mersch receive European Parliament backing

Majority of European Parliament votes in favour of new ECB president and supervisory vice-chair

Christine Lagarde and Yves Mersch both received the backing of the European Parliament today (September 17), clearing the way for them to take up senior posts at the European Central Bank.

In a vote held around midday, Lagarde gained a 61% majority in favour of her appointment as the next president of the ECB. She received 394 votes in favour, 206 against and 49 abstentions.
