Two-tier banking system could be turned on its head by CBDC, says BIS chief
The role of a central bank could drastically change if it issued central bank digital currency (CBDC) to members of the public, according to the general manager of the Bank for International Settlements.
A known sceptic when it comes to crypto assets, Agustín Carstens similarly warned there could be drawbacks to CBDC. In particular, he said central banks may have to become lenders to the general public if they were to open up access to their accounts.
